Complete nonlinear polarization control in an optical fiber system.

2010

International audience; We consider the counterpropagating interaction of a signal and a pump beam in an isotropic optical fiber. On the basis of recently developed mathematical techniques, we show that an arbitrary state of polarization of the signal beam can be converted into any other desired state of polarization. On the other hand, an unpolarized signal beam may be repolarized into two specific states of polarization, without loss of energy. Both processes of repolarization and polarization conversion may be controlled by adjusting the polarization state of the backward pump.

Spatial beam self-cleaning in multimode fibres

2017

Multimode optical fibres are enjoying a renewed attention, boosted by the urgent need to overcome the current capacity crunch of single-mode fibre systems and by recent advances in multimode complex nonlinear optics [1-13]. In this work, we demonstrate that standard multimode fibres can be used as ultrafast all-optical tool for transverse beam manipulation of high power laser pulses. Our experimental data show that the Kerr effect in a graded-index multimode fibre is the driving mechanism for overcoming speckle distortions, leading to a somewhat counter-intuitive effect resulting in a spatially clean output beam robust against fibre bending. Our observations demonstrate that nonlinear beam …

Emergence of extreme events in fiber-based parametric processes driven by a partially incoherent pump wave

2009

Modulation instability (MI) generated by a picosecond coherent pulse has been recently identified as the key element of the generation of optical rogue-waves in supercontinuum-based systems [1]. Similar rare but highly energetic pulse structures can also appear in non-solitonic configurations such as Raman amplifiers driven by a partially incoherent pump wave propagating in fibres with low group velocity dispersion [2]. Therefore, one may wonder whether optical rogue-like event can also occur in MI-based amplifier because both Raman and parametric amplifiers benefit from a quasi-instantaneous gain. We provide here experimental evidence of rare optical events in a parametric amplifier in pre…

Numerical study of an optical regenerator exploiting self-phase modulation and spectral offset filtering at 40 Gbit/s

2008

Topic: Nonlinear optics; International audience; In this work, we numerically investigate the performances of optical regenerators based on self-phase modulation and spectral offset filtering at 40 Gbit/s. We outline the different effects affecting the device performances and explain the choice of the optimal working power. The impact of the regenerator on the output signal is also analysed through a statistical approach. Both single- and double-stage configurations are investigated.

Attracteur de polarisation dans les fibres optiques

2004

Nous etudions la dynamique non lineaire des etats de polarisation de deux ondes coherentes ou incoherentes se propageant dans une fibre optique. Nous presentons en particulier un effet original d'attraction de la polarisation.

Large Quadratic Hyperpolarizabilities with Donor–Acceptor Polyenes Exhibiting Optimum Bond Length Alternation: Correlation Between Structure and Hype…

1997

Donor-acceptor polyenes of various lengths, and that combine aro- matic electron-donating moieties with powerful heterocyclic electron-withdraw- ing terminal groups, have been synthe- sized and characterized as efficient non- linear optical (NLO) chromophores. Their linear and nonlinear optical proper- ties have been investigated, and variations in these properties have been related to ground-state polarization (dipole p) and structure. In particular, unprecedented quadratic hyperpolarizabilities (p) have been achieved (up to p(0) =I500 x 10-30esu) by reduction of the bond- length alternation (BLA) in the polyenic chain. Tuning the high-order harmonic lines of a Nd:Glass laser for soft x-ray laser seeding

2010

Taking advantage of the non-adiabatic blue-shift of high-order harmonics generated by a fixed frequency Nd:Glass laser system, we are able to report more than 50 % coverage of the XUV spectral range between 18 nm and 35 nm. The generated harmonic lines are capable of seeding Ni-like Y, Zr and Mo soft x-ray lasers and others.

Very narrow-bandwidth tunable infrared difference frequency generation with injection-locked dye lasers

1989

Two flashlamp pumped dye lasers of very high spectral quality are mixed in a LiIO3 crystal to generate a tunable infrared beam through the difference frequency mixing. Thanks to the injection-locking process of the pulsed dye lasers leading to a linewidth of 6 MHz with peak powers of about 10 kW, we obtain an IR beam tunable from 3.5 to 5.9 μm with a peak power of 40 W and a linewidth of 9 MHz. As an application we present a spectrum of N2O obtained by differential absorption near 1880 cm−1. The lines of thisQ-branch are Doppler limited at the working pressure (102 Pa).

Akhmediev breathers as ultra-wideband pulses

2014

We analytically calculate and discuss the radio-frequency spectrum of the so called Akhmediev breathers (ABs), a class of nonlinear solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation that governs the propagation in a single mode optical fiber. We propose a practical application of ABs to the field of ultra-wideband pulse generation. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:664–667, 2014
